What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth that are dingy and stained are unattractive and can keep you from wanting to show your smile, and whitening toothpastes usually aren’t enough to make a noticeable difference. For patients located in or near West Babylon, NY who are serious about getting a whiter, brighter smile, Dr. Clifford Brown, Dr. Stephen Peck, Dr. Harold Gaynes and associates provide top-notch professional teeth whitening treatments. With our innovative whitening techniques, your teeth can be white, bright, and beautiful virtually overnight!
What Causes My Teeth to Become Stained?
There are a variety of reasons why you may have stained teeth. Some of these causes are preventable, but some are actually beyond your control. You may have stains due to:
- Drinking dark beverages, such as tea, coffee, wine, and sodas
- Tobacco use (smoking cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco)
- A natural genetic disposition
- The use of certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline
If you want to maintain a bright smile, it is important that you avoid excessive dark beverage drinking, and avoid smoking at all costs (not only for your teeth, but also for the sake of your overall health)! However, even if you are a multiple cup-per-day coffee drinker or a smoker, you can still get that white, bright smile with teeth whitening from our dentists.

ZOOM!® Whitening Cosmetic Dentistry Service
ZOOM! whitening is an in-office teeth whitening service to whiten teeth up to 8 shades lighter. It is great for patients who want to get rid of their yellow, stained teeth in a quick way. You can even schedule your teeth whitening appointment during your lunch break and have your teeth whitened in about one hour!
What can patients expect?
The procedure is pretty simple and painless. Before the appointment, we may recommend that patients take Advil to lessen the degree of sensitivity.
During the treatment, we use a special lamp to penetrate the teeth and remove stains. During the process, we use a mouth retractor to ensure your lips and chin do not get exposed to the Zoom! bleach or the Zoom! light.
We apply the bleaching agent evenly to your teeth for a bright, new smile. The bleach will stay on your teeth for 15-minute intervals until the desired result is achieved. Typically, 4 sessions are recommended for maximum results.
Once treatment is finished, our cosmetic dentists inform patients that if stain-causing foods are consumed within 24-48 hours, brushing is recommended. Lastly, to help with tooth sensitivity, we sometimes provide patients with fluoride treatments.
When you receive your ZOOM! teeth whitening treatment at Babylon Dental Care, you will be automatically enrolled in our Whitening for Life Program!

Frequently Asked Questions about Teeth Whitening
Here are some of the most common questions about teeth whitening, including its safety, effectiveness, and who qualifies for treatment. If you’re considering brightening your smile, these answers can help you make an informed decision.
How do you determine if I am a candidate for teeth whitening?
Before undergoing teeth whitening, your dentist will assess the health of your teeth and gums to determine if you are a suitable candidate. Generally, individuals with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for teeth whitening. However, certain dental conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease, or dental restorations may affect your candidacy.
Are teeth whitening safe, and are there any side effects?
Teeth whitening is considered safe when performed under the supervision of a dental professional. However, some individuals may experience temporary side effects such as tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. These side effects are typically mild and resolve on their own after treatment.
How does teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening works by using bleaching agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down stains and discoloration on the surface of the teeth. These bleaching agents penetrate the enamel and oxidize the pigmented molecules, resulting in a whiter and brighter smile.
Will teeth whitening treatment damage my enamel or existing dental restorations?
When performed by a dental professional, teeth whitening should not damage enamel or existing dental restorations such as fillings or crowns. However, it’s essential to consult with your dentist before undergoing treatment to ensure that your dental restorations are in good condition and will not be affected by the whitening process.
Can I touch up my teeth whitening results at home?
With our Whitening For Life program, we offer take-home whitening kits that allow patients to touch up their results at home. These kits contain custom-fitted trays and a milder concentration of bleaching gel compared to in-office treatments. We will provide instructions on how to safely use the kit for touch-up purposes.
Are there any foods or beverages I should avoid after teeth whitening?
After teeth whitening, it’s advisable to avoid consuming foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored sauces. Additionally, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene habits to prolong the results of teeth whitening.
Is teeth whitening covered by dental insurance?
In most cases, teeth whitening is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not typically covered by dental insurance. However, some dental insurance plans may offer coverage for teeth whitening if it is deemed medically necessary due to certain dental conditions or discoloration caused by trauma or medication. It’s best to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage options.
