Smoking and chewing tobacco have long been known to present a serious threat to oral health and a major risk factor for certain types of cancer. However, there is also a common misconception that vaping represents a safer form of tobacco consumption, and many consumers are seemingly unaware of the harm they may be doing to their health. A recent study published in the medical journal Australian Prescriber focused specifically on vaping’s effects on oral health, putting many of these myths to rest.
Understanding the Risks of Vaping on Oral Health
Here’s how vaping undermines oral health, according to Australian Prescriber’s study.
By Upsetting the Oral Cavity’s Microbiome
One of the leading dangers of vaping is its effect on the oral microbiome. Changes to this can lead to the development of cancer-causing bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans as well as the suppression of healthy bacteria like Streptococcus sanguinis. The changed microbiome can lead to an increased risk of both periodontal disease and tooth decay. The changed microbiome affects not just natural teeth but also implants, which are more likely to fail.
By Introducing Acidic Liquids
The liquids used in e-cigarettes and other vaping products have a low pH balance, meaning they’re acidic. Acids wear down tooth enamel over time, leaving the teeth less protected.
By Causing Dry Mouth
Vaping can also reduce salivary flow, which causes discomfort and makes it difficult to eat, swallow, and speak normally. Moreover, without the oral health protections that saliva provides, individuals are more prone to cavities, periodontal disease, halitosis (bad breath), and infections.
By Irritating the Mucus Membrane
Many people who vape complain of a burning or stinging sensation associated with oral mucosal irritation—that is, irritation to the mucus membrane that surrounds the oral cavity. Injury to this mucus layer can also damage teeth.
By Possibly Causing Oral Cancer
Australian Prescriber is quick to note that research into the link between vaping and oral cancer remains ongoing. However, there is already strong evidence of the carcinogenic potential of aerosol agents used in e-cigarettes, such as acetaldehyde. These agents can upset the oral microbiome, inducing DNA changes and cell death. Furthermore, the tobacco contained in e-cigarettes has long been shown to cause oral leukoplakia.
Vaping vs. Smoking
According to researchers, it’s still too early to know how dangerous vaping is to oral health relative to smoking. However, given the many known hazards of tobacco use and the number of potentially carcinogenic agents in e-cigarettes, Australian Prescriber encourages patients to talk to their dentists about the potential hazards of vaping and how it could be affecting their oral health.
