Dental Tips for People with Braces: Keeping Your Smile Clean

Book your next appointment

Braces are a big step toward a better smile, but they require extra care. Brackets and wires trap food, leading to plaque buildup and cavities if you’re not careful. Keeping your braces clean isn’t hard, but it takes extra effort. Want to maintain a healthy smile? Here are some simple, practical tips to keep your teeth in top shape.

Brush Your Teeth After Every Meal

Brushing twice a day was fine before braces, but now you need to step it up. Food gets stuck in your brackets, leading to plaque, bad breath, and cavities. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and brush after every meal. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and use circular motions to clean around brackets and along the gumline. If possible, switch to an electric toothbrush for an even better clean.

Flossing Might Be Annoying, But Don’t Skip It

Flossing with braces isn’t fun, but skipping it isn’t an option. Food and plaque get trapped, leading to gum disease and cavities. Use a floss threader to get under wires, or try interdental brushes or a water flosser. Whatever method you pick, floss at least once daily to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Be Smart About What You Eat

Some foods don’t mix with braces. Sticky foods like caramel and gum get stuck, while hard foods like nuts and ice can break brackets. Avoid them when possible. For crunchy foods like apples or carrots, cut them into small pieces to reduce pressure. A little caution now prevents damage and saves you trouble later.

Rinse with Mouthwash to Keep Bacteria Away

Brushing and flossing are essential, but a good mouthwash can boost your oral health. Rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash helps kill bacteria that cause gum disease, and using a fluoride rinse strengthens your enamel and helps prevent cavities. It only takes 30 seconds but can make a big difference in your overall braces care routine.

Pay Attention to Your Diet

Your teeth (and braces) will thank you if you eat a balanced diet. Foods rich in calcium and vitamins—such as dairy products, leafy greens, and lean proteins—help keep your teeth strong. On the other hand, sugary snacks and acidic drinks can weaken your enamel and increase your risk of tooth decay. If you do have something sweet, try to brush your teeth afterward or at least rinse with water.

Use Orthodontic Wax for Any Irritation

Brackets and wires can be rough on the inside of your mouth, especially when you first get them or after adjustments. Orthodontic wax is a lifesaver for this—just put a little over any area rubbing against your cheeks or lips to prevent sores and irritation. If a wire comes loose or a bracket breaks, don’t wait—contact immediately to get it fixed.

Keep Up with Your Dental Appointments

Just because you’re seeing your orthodontist regularly doesn’t mean you can skip your regular dentist visits. Professional cleanings help remove plaque buildup in spots you might miss, and your dentist can check for cavities and gum problems before they become serious. Plus, your orthodontist needs to make sure your treatment stays on track, so don’t skip any scheduled appointments.

Carry a Braces Care Kit Everywhere

Having a small kit with you can make braces maintenance way easier, especially when you’re out and about. Keep a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss threaders, and orthodontic wax in your bag so you’re always prepared. If you get food stuck in your braces or need to deal with irritation, you can take care of it on the spot.

Protect Your Braces If You Play Sports

A mouthguard isn’t just about preventing injuries—it also keeps your braces from causing cuts that can trap food and bacteria. A hit to the face can damage your brackets, making cleaning tougher. Ask your orthodontist about a custom-fit mouthguard for the best protection.

Stick to Good Oral Hygiene—It’s Worth It!

Taking care of your braces might sometimes feel like a hassle, but it’s all worth it in the end. When your braces come off, you’ll have a straight, beautiful smile, and if you’ve been keeping up with good oral hygiene, your teeth will be strong and healthy, too. A little extra effort now means better results later!

Keep Your Smile on Track

Braces require some effort to keep clean, but it’s worth it. Brush and floss, avoid foods that can mess them up, and don’t skip dental visits. Have any questions about caring for your braces? Call at or visit our contact page to book an appointment today!

“Absolutely incredible team. From the very moment you walk in you're greeted with kindness and people who want to help you. When I was asked how everything was I literally told them I was speechless. Having had terrible experiences as a kid with dentistry I wasn't sure if the nice things I've heard and read would live up to my expectation. I'm so glad they met them, and even went above and beyond what I had imagined. They offered me several options (a comfort menu) for things I could ask for to help make the time go by easier and with less anxiety.. all for free! If you have been holding off due to how long it's been and how anxious you might be then take this as your sign to look into coming here. I really truly am so glad I overcame my fear and made my appointment, they are just *that* good”
